    BioTek Instruments recently announced the expansion of its world headquarters in Winooski, Vermont, USA. The company added 8,000 square feet; effectively increasing the size of its Service department by 50% and housing a new applications laboratory. Additionally, existing space will be repurposed to manufacturing; providing space for the company’s new product lines introduced in the coming year and beyond.

    BioTek Instruments, Inc., in collaboration with Millipore Corporation, has released the application note, “Automated Magnetic Bead Washing of Metabolic Hormone Assays” featuring BioTek’s new ELx405™ Magnetic Bead Washer and Millipore’s MILLIPLEX™ MAP Metabolic Hormone Assay Panel. The application details the use of the ELx405 Magnetic Bead Washer to automate the various wash steps used with the MILLIPLEX MAP assay as it pertains to a hormone assay panel. This assay is appropriate for researchers working with cytokines, acute phase proteins, diabetes biomarkers, and other hormones.

    BioTek Instruments along with Madison, Wisconsin based Promega Corporation, demonstrate the use of Promega’s microwell cell-based assays in a triplex format to generate more biologically relevant data per single well with straightforward and cost-effective automated systems such as BioTek’s Precision™ Automated Microplate Pipetting Systems. The collaboration commenced at LabAutomation 2009 with a presentation of the scientific poster “Automated Triplex Assay to Assess Cell Viability, Cytotoxicity and Apoptosis.” The poster detailed automation of a triplex application to evaluate the effects of compounds on cell viability, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis over time. Using BioTek’s Precision XS Automated Sample Processor for all dispensing steps in conjunction with Promega’s cell-based assays, provides a small-scale, cost effective cell-based screening method to obtain more biologically relevant data per well.
